What is Health?
The World Health Organisation defines health in their Constitution which entered into force on 7 April 1948. The opening sentence of this definition is as follows:
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
I’m healthy because I don’t feel sick!
Most people when asked if they are healthy will tell you they are if they’re not feeling sick.
It’s easy to point the finger at others who have had a chronic cough for over 6 months, but what if you are seemingly healthy and have no “real” symptoms, but are regularly constipated or on the other end of the spectrum have diarrhoea?
The Absence of Disease
Having no symptoms doesn’t mean your body is absent of disease.
Ask a woman who has been diagnosed with abnormal HPV cells in a routine pap smear whether they felt sick or felt any discomfort before receiving the test result and they will probably tell you that everything seems fine.
Our bodies internally can be diseased for a long time before the recognised symptoms show up.
However, our bodies are giving us little signs all the time.
Reactive Medicine vs Prevention
When the big symptoms show up, we have been internally sick for a long time and we need to react, take medicine, have surgery, anything to keep us from feeling sick.
We all understand about preventing our cars from breaking down by taking it to the mechanics for regular servicing, but we neglect to maintain our own bodies, and take time out for regular body servicing.
Pay the Doctor to Keep You Healthy
Back in 16th century China, people paid the Doctor to keep them healthy, and when they got sick, they will stop paying their Doctor until they were well again.
Li Shizhen was a Chinese doctor in this era that taught people self-awareness, morality, meditation, introspection and how to act to be able to live a happy healthy life.
Today “Concierge Medicine” is emerging and growing as an industry where people who can afford it are paying their Doctors for home visits to either keep them well or assist them to get well in a more comprehensive and holistic fashion.
